Neosho Arts Council and the Newton County Historical Museum are partnering to bring a unique workshop to the area on October 19 which will focus on textile preservation on a budget.
“This workshop is designed to help the everyday person learn how to preserve and properly handle items such as military uniforms, quilts, vintage clothes, hats and more,” said Sarah Serio, president of the Neosho Arts Council. Textiles are items made from cloth, yarn, or similar materials.
Dr. Amber Clifford will be leading the workshop which will cover how to care for a variety of textiles with budget friendly practices. She serves as a Professor of Anthropology and the Director of the McClure Archives and University Museum at the University of Central Missouri.
“We all have collections such as quilts or uniforms, and they're just as important as museum objects,” Dr. Clifford said. “We all want to keep some things safe for future generations. Learning preservation is a way to do that.”
Attendees will enjoy a presentation by Dr. Clifford followed by a Q&A session. Everyone is also invited to bring any textile items with them that they want to get specific guidance on.
“It is our hope that our communities will learn how important and rewarding it is to take care of our historic items. By taking the time to properly care for the items of our parents, grandparents, and ancestors, we honor them and keep their memories and stories alive,” explained Justin Carnahan, Newton County Historical Museum Board Member.
Dr. Clifford will cover the process of caring for a variety of materials and items and how to prevent damage. Proper care and storage will prevent unnecessary deterioration to textile items.
“This is a wonderful chance for not only local groups to learn about the proper maintenance and care of existing exhibits, but also individuals in the community who want to be able to pass down family heirlooms,” Carnahan said.
The workshop will take place at 10:00am at the Newton County Historical Museum Park (121 N Washington St, Neosho, MO 64850) and is free of charge. You can learn more at neoshoarts.net.
