Herman Jaeger, a Swiss immigrant, settled six miles east of Neosho in 1865 and started a vineyard. He located superior wild grapes in the area. Some of these local disease resistant varieties he sent to France in the 1870’s when the French wine industry was devastated. His contribution to saving French wines earned him the Legion of Honor from France.
