Grow Granby, Sydney Angel and Jaclyn Kidd, 2022,  Sign Mural
Read Transcript
Grow Granby is a 10' x 16' sign mural composed of: 4 - 10’ x 4’ aluminum panels. It was painted with exterior acrylic paint. It was designed by Jaclyn Kidd and painted by Sydney Angel.

The panels are fastened together into a vertical rectangle and installed on the south side of one of the oldest remaining buildings in downtown Granby. The red brick structure was built in 1906 and served as a supply company and hardware store for generations.

At the top of the work, we see the words “Grow Granby” in white, sans serif capital letters nestled amongst some of the flora that fills the rest of the artwork and overlaps with each other. Around the letters, starting at the top right corner and moving clockwise around, we see: Purple Poppy Mallow (long, skinny stalks each with one flower that have short, rounded, wide petals of purple all pulled up), Bluebells (small, bell-shaped blossoms of blue growing from all directions and heights of tall, green stalks), Black-Eyed Susans (long, skinny yellow petals spaced around a domed, dark brown center atop a green stem), Daises (skinny white petals layered around a yellow center), and Cliff Goldenrod (tall, bushy stalks with long, droopy clusters of tiny, yellow flowers).

Moving down to the center of the piece, we see a Dogwood blossom (a small, yellow center with four large, round petals) to the right. The petals are white and come to a tip that pinches in. Toward the left side, is a Purple Coneflower (large, orange-brown, domed centers with rounded, skinny petals that point downward). Moving further down, we see a large daisy in the center of the work with Purple Poppy Mallow to the left and Cliff Goldenrod to the right.

In the bottom of the sign mural, we see another Daisy, Purple Coneflower, some Purple Poppy Mallow, a Black-Eyed Susan, and Bluebells. All of which stand out from a solid dark background.

In the summer of 2021, Grow Granby, a nonprofit economic and community development organization, put out a call for submissions for a sign mural to be painted in downtown Granby. Sydney Angel approached her friend, graphic designer Jaclyn Kidd, to collaborate on the bid. The pair researched the project goal set by Grow Granby which was to inspire citizens and visitors to the town of Granby, MO. According to Kidd, the energetic colors and textures provide both a bright backdrop that showcases the simple yet powerful message “Grow Granby” and also allows individuals to draw their own meaning from the phrase. After the pair's proposal was accepted by the organization, Angel began painting in the Fall of 2021 in  her home in nearby Neosho, MO. Once complete, the panels were transported to Granby and installed on May 12, 2022. An official ribbon cutting celebration was held on June 3 of that year.

A Historical Look at the Mural's Location
Picture
In the summer of 1906 construction was started on what would be one of Granby's largest buildings.  The location would be home to one of Granby's hardware and supply stores for decades.

Originally opened as Scholes Hardware Company the business would have several owners and names including Douthitt Brothers Hardware and Supply Company.

On December 3, 1943 Floyyd and Fred Shewmake purchased the business and opened Shewmake Supply Company.

In 1971 Fred sold the business to Johnny Johnson.

By 1989 the business was sold once again to Jerry Cornett who established Main Street Furniture.

Since then a number of small businesses have operated in the location but sadly the building is currently in need to restoration work.
